Might and Magic VII

Notes

Starting out   Erathia   Tularean Forest   Harmondale   Barrow Downs   Tatalia   Bracada   Deyja
Avlee  Evermorn Nighon

I had this game in my shelf for a long time and never played it through. Now I decided to give it another shot and must say I find it quite fun so far.

On starting, I took the default party of Knight, Thief, Cleric and Sorceror. Only change I made was to set the Knight to female. I really should have changed the Sorcerors voice, it is so annoying to hear a whiney "It's just a cut but I need it healed!" all the time.

The party is around level 27 by now, with all characters through their first promotion.

Starting out

Emerald Island

Pretty straightforward quest to collect several items, I just explored around and was level 4 or 5 by the time I had completed it and could leave. Only thing I found somewhat difficult was getting the musical instrument. Spoiler (highlight to read): I bought it from a bard wandering outdoors near the docks. I ran through the dragon layer, avoiding blasts and collecting stuff. Money was a problem, I did not have nearly enough to pay for everything I wanted. Finally I took a ship to

Harmondale

I checked all the buildings in the main village before venturing into my castle and ridding it of goblins and bats. Revealed a traitor with a scroll I found in the castle. I then proceeded to clear the outdoors area. Nothing real difficult and the guards helped me with the goblins somewhat. Then I went into the caves across the bridge in the south and found the a card deck (which also was part of a quest in Harmondale), nice reward and  the first time you play and win in a tavern nets you some money. Then, as my butler had advised me, I went to the Barrow Downs to talk to the dwarves.

Barrow Downs

Checked out the few houses in the north and won another Arcomage game in the tavern there. I then went into the barrows but soon came out again and cleared the outdoors of undead. Found the dwarven Stone City across a bridge near the center. Inside I talked to the king and got told I had to free 7 dwarves turned to stone in the Red Dwarf Mines in the Bracada Desert. Took on and solved a quest to free the mines under Stone City of critters, needed to go back up several times to heal. Nice treasure and I could finally learn Plate with my knight. Went back outside and (with the help of the fire resistance pedestral near the Stone City) killed the Gogs. I decided to put off helping the dwarves somewhat in order to become stronger, since the Medusas in the mines sounded very dangerous. From what people in houses had told me, most expert teachers could be found in Harmondale, Erathia and the Tularean Forest so I decided to visit there. From now on I wandered around quite a bit so I will just note under the map what I did. The notes in the lists under each map are in the order I came across them.

Levelling and Questing

My party wandered or travelled by ship or steed to all maps on the main continent by level 19, except for the Land of the Giants. I have cleared most outdoors areas of red monsters, except for southern and western Avlee (too tough). The southwest corner of Erathia I found the way into pretty late, but by then clearing the griffons was easy.

Some dungeons have proven too hard, as noted under the respective area. I  bought all normal and expert level spells for my characters by level 16 and by level 21 I have done the promotion quests for all four characters. Time to go for the Red Dwarf Mines.

The mines were super easy at my level and I solved the warrior mage quest on the way. Our castle in Harmondale is much nicer now, but the rulers in Erathia and Tularean forest start to act up. I cheated both, interested to see what becomes of it.

They seem to have forgiven me, I brought some artifact trumpet to Queen Catherine and then went through the dwarven tunnels to Nighon.

Misc

The brass lamps I found in Deyja give different effects on different days, so far I got +2 speed, +2 some resist, +7500 exp and eradicated and +10000 exp. The apples add one food to the party when eaten. Slopes the party cannot move up to can often be climbed by pressing the jump key repeatedly.

Erathia

Village of Steadwick, where you can learn many skills and turn in the ores you find all over to make items with. Got some nice stuff. Was easy with party level around 9, except for the area with griffons I cleared later. The Paramount Guild of  Spirit and the Master Guild of Body and some ?? Guild of Mind are situated on a hill next to the castle.

Evenmorn Island

Several islands connected by bridge or ford overrun with undead and gargoyles. Very easy to clear at level 20. Some trainers still live here, and there are two large temples. Both where easy to completly clear by the time I got here.

Nighon

A rocky area full of mountains where Rocs, evil Warlocks and Hydras wander. The Paramount Guild of Fire oversees a village.
